As already mentioned, we manufacture short lengths of timber in pine and spruce. Pine accounts for approx. 30%. Most of production consists of small dimensions, and the largest dimension that we manufacture is 63 x 150. The sawmill has a capacity of 35,000 m3 of sawn and trimmed timber in single-shift operation.
In the timber grading yard the raw material is sorted by species, grade and length. The logs are turned during sorting, to guarantee that the fibre orientation is always consistent.
The timber is cut using the so-called reducer method. All cutting is carried out using scribing blades, to eliminate deflection during cutting. Mostly the production is sawn 2 ex.log, although with the modernisation of the sawmill in 2002 it is also possible to saw 3 and 4 ex.log. The sawn timber is stacked on battens when sawn, and then transported directly to one of the eight drying kilns.
The drying kilns are controlled using modern computer technology, and the drying programs used are the very best available on the market. Drying technology is upgraded continuously, and all drying kilns are equipped with high-pressure processing to minimise splitting and stress in the timber. When drying below 16% moisture content, all top bundles are weighted with concret blocks to prevent twisting. The moisture content is adapted to meet the customer's requirements, and can be anything from 8% to 18%. Heat for the drying kilns is obtained from the municipality's solid fuel heating plant, which also supplies the community of Kilafors with heating and hot water.
After conditioning, the timber is sorted in a trimming plant. The plant is fully flexible, enabling timber to be cut according to customer specification. For example, instead of the standard length 3,0 m, timber can be cut to 2930 mm if required. Our deliveries can therefore go stright into a customer´s production line without any further cutting.
Timber can be delivered by road, rail or sea, depending on the customer´s preferences and the destination. Consignments delivered by sea and all dried timber for furniture are covered on five sides by plastic film.´
The sawmill has 12 employees. The group employs a total of 25 people, including contractors. Great emphasis is placed on personnel being well trained, motivated and well informed. Job rotation ensures that everyone is able to perform all the jobs that are needed in a sawmill. As mentioned before, all employees have also undergone training in the ISO 9002 quality standard. At regular, properly documented staff meetings we report on the market situation and production results, together with planned investments, so that employees may review them and voice their opinions. Staff can also bring up for discussion any problems that require action. With so few employees, this means that all employees receive the same information at the same time. When orders are received for the preparation of a delivery of timber, staff are also informed of the intended purpose of the delivery and its country of destination.
